Bees

What is the buzz?

We have five hives of honey bees, all named after flowers.  In each one there is a queen bee who lays all the eggs, female worker bees who collect the nectar and pollen and male drone bees.

Did you know that the drone bees cannot sting?

We have planted a wildflower meadow in the apiary so the bees don’t have to go far for their pollen and nectar, but they can fly 3 miles for food.

They’re so clever that they can remember which flowers have food, where they have been and even use landmarks as a map to find their way back to the hive.

After harvesting the honey, we sell it to the school and community.  Its tastes lovely, sweet and fresh and we never have enough to meet demand.
